The Soul of the River: The 15-Step Art of Bagh Print

Authentic Handmade Bagh Block Prints

At Pankhudibazaar, we don’t just sell fabric; we preserve a 1,000-year-old legacy. Originating from the banks of the Baghini River in Madhya Pradesh, Bagh Block Printing is a rhythmic dance of wood, water, and earth.
Every saree , suit, Bedsheets , Curtains  you find in our collection has undergone a rigorous, entirely manual process that can take up to 20 days to complete.
The Alchemy of Natural Colors
Unlike mass-produced digital prints, Bagh printing relies on the earth. Our signature palette is deep, soulful, and eco-friendly:
Deep Red (Aal): Derived from Alizarin and the roots of the madder plant.
Charcoal Black (Syahi): Created by fermenting rusted iron with jaggery for over 15 days.
Indigo Blue: Sourced from the natural Indigofera tinctoria plant.
The Journey from Plain Cloth to Masterpiece
1. Khara (The Pre-Wash): The raw cotton is soaked in water for several days to remove impurities and "open up" the fibers to receive the dye.
2. The Batti (The Softening): The fabric is treated with a mixture of castor oil and goat droppings. While it sounds unusual, this ancient bio-chemical process is what makes our Bagh Print Bedspreads and Sarees incredibly soft to the touch.
3. Chhapayi (The Hand-Blocking): Using hand-carved teak wood blocks, our master artisans stamp the fabric with surgical precision. Each "Jaal" (mesh) or "Buti" (floral) pattern requires a steady hand and years of experience.
4. The Magic of the Baghini River: The printed fabric is taken to the river. The minerals in the flowing water react with the natural dyes, "fixing" the colors and giving them a vibrance that chemical dyes can never replicate.
5. Vichaliya (The Final Wash): After drying in the sun, the fabric is boiled in large copper vats to reveal the final, brilliant hues of the Bagh print.
